Autumn Skincare: How to Recover Your Skin After Summer (And Why You Still Need SPF)
When September arrives, the sun still warms us and it can reach 28 degrees, but your skin is already sending signals that summer was tough. Sea, salt, air conditioning, sun… all of it leaves a mark. Skin can become dry, tight, lose that healthy glow, and somehow look tired. I always take this as a sign to give it a little tune-up.
What Happens to Your Skin Over Summer?
Summer is wonderful, but skin struggles with everything coming from outside. The sun strips away moisture and makes it more sensitive, while air conditioning and the sea further dry it out. This can lead to fine lines, tightness, and even redness. It's nothing terrible, but if you ignore it, autumn might greet you with skin that's crying out for attention.
What Does an Autumn Routine Look Like in Practice?
For me, autumn has proven to be the perfect time for a three-step routine:
Gentle cleansing
Nothing aggressive, nothing that will irritate the skin even more.Layered hydration
This can be a serum or essence under your cream, then the cream itself. This way, skin gets both moisture and oils, exactly what it needs to restore elasticity.Barrier protection
This means I don't skip the cream, no matter how much I think I don't have time.
Why Does SPF Still Make Sense?
I know, we all can't wait to put away the SPF when summer ends, but the truth is that UV rays haven't disappeared just because the days are shorter. In September, they're still there, maybe milder than in July, but enough to cause damage. If you're outside during the day, at least a light layer of protection still makes sense. Your skin will thank you in ten years, trust me.
Small Habits That Mean a Lot
Besides skincare products, what you do every day matters a lot.
I like to shorten my showers and make sure the water isn't too hot because hot water additionally dries out the skin. Sometimes I turn on a humidifier at home when the heating season starts, and it helps me a lot. And yes, hydration from within always works. Teas, water, it all makes a difference.
For Sensitive Skin and Allergy Sufferers
If you're part of the crew that suffers from allergies in autumn, you know how much skin can go wild. A calming routine helps here.
Less fragrance, more gentle and nourishing formulas. If you feel your skin is particularly sensitive, go minimal: gentle cleansing, cream, and nothing more until it calms down.
And Finally, Let's Summarize...
Autumn isn't scary. It's just an invitation to slow down and give your skin what it asks for:
gentle cleansing,
layered hydration,
a protective cream, and
a little attention to the small things.
When you set it up like this, skin recovers quickly and glows again. And then we can peacefully enter the colder months – without panic and without feeling like we've missed something.
